The King's Equal
By Katherine Paterson. Far far away a dying king makes his selfish son Raphael, ruler of the kingdom. But there is a catch: he can't be king until he marries a woman who is equal to him in beauty, intelligence, and wealth. But Raphael thinks there is no one like this. He then orders his councilors to search the world for the perfect princess. Then they find a poor and clever girl named Rosamund to be Raphael's equal. But it is more complicated because she must not only be his equal he must be hers.
